Teachers
Rev. Donald Van Dyken
Rev. Van Dyken has been in the ministry since 1981. He has been involved in the homeschooling of his ten children since 1982. He has always been active in the teaching ministry of the church, is the author of Rediscovering Catechism, the Art of Equipping Covenant Children, and of teacher’s manuals on catechism teaching. He has been the Administrator/Principal and Logic teacher at Coram Deo for the past two years.
Karen Nyman
Mrs. Nyman, who has worked in the field of education for the past ten years, earned her B.A. in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English from Northwest Nazarene University and a Masters in Literacy through Washington State University. Her varied teaching experiences include Washington public schools, a Korean English language institute, and a private Christian school in a Muslim country. Her hope is to instill in her students a love of learning and a desire to understand the world through a Christ-centered education.
Diana Petty
Mrs. Petty was born in Bulgaria – a beautiful country on the Balkan Peninsula in Europe. She has a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria and a PhD in Atmospheric Science from Nagoya University, Japan. For the past several years she has been tutoring students in math, physics and chemistry (including AP and SAT exams preparation) in addition to her full-time job at TestAmerica Inc. Mrs. Petty has a passion for teaching and education. Her goal is to help each student to achieve their best. She is a devoted Christian and supports the study of Scientific Creationism.
Mary Leenheer
Mary studied Chemistry and Oceanography at the University of Michigan receiving a MS in Chemistry and a PhD in Oceanic Science. She has homeschooled all of her five daughters. She has taught chemistry and physics at CBC. She has also taught novel writing, chemistry, physics, and biology labs, Shakespeare plays, high school Histories of the World, and musicals to homeschool students. She enjoys helping students discover and learn about God’s creation.
Ria Van Dyken
Ria has ten children all of whom were homeschooled. She went to community college where she received her AA with an emphasis on teaching the handicapped. Ria and her husband’s primary goal in raising and educating their children has always been to raise godly children who are willing workers in the kingdom of Christ. She has a passion for history as well as good literature. This will be her fourth year of teaching Omnibus.
Yuri Dotson
Mrs. Dotson was born in Quito, Ecuador in South America where Spanish was her native language. She came to the United States in 1991 and graduated with a degree in Christian Education from Rio Grand Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas in 1995. In September of 2009, Mrs. Dotson became a U.S. citizen! She has been teaching Spanish at Coram Deo for the past three years. She enjoys being able to teach and share her native language, and is grateful for the opportunity to share Christ and minister to her students through teaching Spanish.
Diane Pfaff
Mrs. Pfaff has a love of learning and delights in helping others discover the joys of mathematics and Latin. She earned a BS in Microbiology from the University of Michigan in 1980 and studied education at Simpson University in California, doing her student teaching in secondary mathematics. She studied Spanish in high school, took classes in French and Swedish at the University of Michigan, and has been teaching herself Latin over the past few years. She has tutored CBC students in mathematics and has taught Algebra, Geometry and Latin at Coram Deo, as well as teaching Latin and history classes in her home. She has four children, all of whom she has homeschooled.
